Birthday Party 2017 - Video Playlist

Jay-String-ers,

Thank you for being at my party. The worst part is that it is over before it really begins. Here is the playlist I had that just a fraction of the videos play through. It is pretty rockin'. Enjoy.

Talk About it Being Friday!!

I found this sketch that I wanted to share but wanted to tie in the name, "Let's Talk About Something More Interesting" somehow to music. So, here you go... a good start to the end of the week.

Let's Give Them Something to Talk About

"boys would be gone without warmth from a woman's good, good heart"

Seems fitting considering the exposure of predatory men, lately.

Daughters

I know a girl
She puts the color inside of my world
But, she's just like a maze
Where all of the walls all continually change
And I've done all I can
To stand on her steps with my heart in my hand
Now I'm starting to see
Maybe It's got nothing to do with me

Fathers, be good to your daughters
Daughters will love like you do
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers
So mothers be good to your daughters too
Oh, you see that skin?
It's the same she's been standing in
Since the day she saw him walking away
Now she's left cleaning up the mess he made
So fathers, be good to your daughters
Daughters will love like you do
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers
So mothers be good to your daughters too
Boys, you can break
You'll find out how much they can take
Boys will be strong
And boys soldier on
But boys would be gone without warmth from
A woman's good, good heart
On behalf of every man
Looking out for every girl
You are the God and weight of her world
So fathers, be good to your daughters
Daughters will love like you do
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers
So mothers be good to your daughters too
So mothers be good to your daughters too
So mothers be good to your daughters too

Rock N Roll Hall of Fame Nominee Time - Vote for The Cars!

For about three years I have been voting for the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame nominations. Mostly because I am ticked off that The Cars have not been inducted yet when so many other newer bands have made it in.  Here is where you can vote.

And here are the reasons why they should be inducted, starting with "Just What I Needed" :

Vampires Suck

Two of my favorite vampire flicks of my childhood. This Salem's Lot scene scared me for years.

And The Lost Boys was the coolest horror movie of the late 80's, filmed in Santa Cruz, CA. (great soundtrack too, btw) - and that sidekick vampire of Keifer IS the other half of the Bill and Ted duo.

eh?.... what brain?....

A classic scene from Young Frankenstein....

and the king of Zombies..... Rob Zombie...  I'M YOUR BOOGIEMAN

I love them too. This my favorite jam of theirs.

Gorgeous - X Ambassadors Live

Saw these cats last week for the second time at my conference. They were awesome. This song really struck me for it was the first one that the crowd really started dig and get down with. Been singing it all weekend. Enjoy... You're so Gorgeous! (not you Strings).

RIP Walter

Walter Becker Died Sunday.... When I lived on Maui  I  used to sit on the balcony of the cabin I stayed at...look out west watching the sunset over Moloka'i and listen to Donald Fagen and Walter Becker rehearse in the studio nearby....  RIP Walter... thanks for the great music...  Here's two of my favorites...

No Smoke Without A Fire ---

I awoke with burning eyes from the smoke of the West's multitude of fires and from reading the continued fires of hate speech, greed, and ignorance from our government help to inspire today's songs.

Hedwig's angry inch

Seeing the last video for some reason reminded me of  Hedwig and the Angry Inch.... a true story about a punk rocker male who attempts to cut it all off and become a woman.... the doctor didn't quite get it all...  here is the theme song... funny movie if you haven't seen it...

Paralyzed

A newer band with an old Rolling Stone sound. Hanni El Khalib's "Paralyzed" complete with Michael Jackson impersonators and a NAU Lumberjack imposter! Happy Thirstday.

Typographically Speaking with CCNY's Ina Saltz

Not music for your ears, but for professionals in my line of work, it is music to your eyes

My friend, Ina Saltz, has written many books and two of them are showcased along with her work on typographical tattoos at the New York Historical Society Museum & Library.

At 2:14 - the image on the kiosk is the wrist tat of my other friend, Rocky Montez-Carr. Wish I lived closer to go see this exhibit!

As I head off to my 4:20... an hour late...  and while I'm looking for that happy hour beer... here's my Thursday song....  this was a good party song back in the day...  yea..I know I'm dating myself with the picture of the 45.... deal with it...

Just seems like a good set for this Thursday.

Chuck Barris song...

Written by Chuck Barris who recently died.... Palisades Park..... not a good song...  but one note worthy comment... the song was produced with a heavy echo and mid-rangey tone... because... it was thought at the time to sound better through one speaker AM radios...
I would say .. ENJOY... but that might be asking too much...   nevertheless.....

Thursday Anthem - Tubthumping!

CHUCK BERRY - father of Rock and Roll

One of the biggest influences of Rock and Roll. A Legend.

Wait for it, there is a little bit of dead space at the beginning, but it gets right into a great concert.

House of Pain to Kick Off the Week of Irish!

Often overlooked due to the popularity of their only true hit, "Jump Around" I still appreciate these ditties from House of Pain. Top of the Morning to Ya!
My favorite lines:
"You see I'm Irish, but I'm not a Leprechaun"
and
"Freak it, Funk it, Backseat, Trunk it!"

Of course, there's nothing better than another H.o.P. video introduced by Irish funny man, Dennis Leary back when MTV had videos. "Shamrocks and Shenanigans".

Tribute to the late George Martin

Here's a tribute to the late George Martin, music producer for this concert at Todaiji Temple in Nara Japan... This song is INXS with Japanese guitarist Hotei, Ray Cooper on percussion, Leonard Ito on taiko drums and the Tokyo Phil Harmonic orchestra conducted by Michael Kamen...

Look close at the very end of this video and see a younger Strings take a guitar from INXS.... LOL... nice pony tail dude !!

40 Oz of Freedom for our 40th Post of 2017

I couldn't decide between Smoke Two Joints and Rivers of Babylon, so I give you the entire album. Reggae, Ska, and Rap combined to make something Sublime. Enjoy. TGIF

Aloha......

Listening to this song today... it takes me back as I had a chance to work with Israel while I was in Hawaii...

Most famous for his What a Wonderful World cover...   but I like this one

and HAPA.... which mean s whitey or foreigner in Hawaii

in the beginning he is saying   "the smell of the pikake flower is picked up by a gentle breeze and carried to my nose... and that reminds me of you"

Guess where I wish I was today....

Oscar Nominated - Sting - Empty Chair

Well, of course, the Sting concert was freakin' amazing. It was like he was in my living room, we were so close. We both said how much we just would like to hang out with him, so personable, so cool.

He ended his encore as he started it, alone on a chair with a guitar. He ended with this song from a documentary movie up for an Oscar, (along with this song). It is about the reporter that was beheaded by ISIS, James Foley.

It has been on my mind as I have been researching so many aspects of our nation's military history, but is fitting for anyone.

Enjoy.

wanna dance?...

The dancing in the  previous Ghengis Kahn video brought this one to mind...

Dude has some moves...

Ghengis Kahn - Miike Snow

Guess I'm into videos that reference old movies this week. Here is a nod to the ambiguously gay James Bond flicks. You have probably heard it. Enjoy.

Hand springs..

This is a cool song...

We Must Fight For Our Right!

First time I encountered this one was on Guitar Hero. Killer solo section that was a bear to pass. Never saw the video until now. KICK ASS! Spaghetti Western, Buck Rogers, Battlestar Galactica, and Kung Fu all rolled into one bad ass rock song video. Watching again, I see references to Planet of the Apes and Lone Ranger too. Anyone see anything else?

Kaz with Chuck Rainey

Here is a very close friend Kaz playing with Chuck Rainey in Japan... you've heard Chuck on albums from Steely Dan to Aretha, Joe Walsh, Herbie Hancock... and a billion others...

Kaz passed away 18 months ago... he was a very good friend for a long time... and one of the most soulful players I've seen...  He did a great version of Joe Cocker You are so beautiful for our first dance at our wedding.. then went right in to Why don't we all go get stoned...

Kaz, your missed !!

Those Shoes

This just hits the spot this morning. Love that beat.

"If you ever go to Houston, boy, you better walk right"

Huddie William "Lead Belly" Ledbetter's Angola Prison tune derived from an American slave folklore song pays the typical correctional facility and crime-twisted tribute to the host of this year's Stooper Bowl, Houston, Texas.

May the Atlanta Falcons be that "Midnight Special" come Sunday.

Thursday, February 2, 2017

Check this....

OK.. maybe not the best song to have in the blog.... Michaal Phillips playing the National Anthem on the sax... but listen to what he does at about 1:15 in to it.... he holds this monster note for over 20 seconds... its called circular breathing... watch the video.. he keeps air going out of his mouth while he breathes in through his nose...  very difficult...

The Prophet Song

One of my most favorite Queen songs of all time. I could not find a Freddie Mercury concert with this song that I felt did the recorded version justice, but I did find this tribute band, The Queen Extravaganza that NAILS IT! So here we go, from Zombies to Prophets:

And in my search, I found this great little documentary on the story behind the song, which I have always wondered about listening to the harmonies blaring in my ear drums in stereo, imagining a choir standing all around me.
